CAMPAIGN STRATEGY EXAMPLES
Impressions - February 2008

Carolyn Grisko & Associates Inc. is currently working with U.S. Cellular on its Connecting Rural America campaign. The grassroots coalition of elected officials, public safety groups and other local and national organizations is working to ensure that rural citizens have access to high-quality wireless telecommunications. Strong media relations has been critical to the campaign, but below are three examples of how we are applying non-traditional campaign methods to effectively connect with target audiences.

arrow Online Advocacy
Awareness generated by successful media relations and coalition building is leading our target audiences to the Connecting Rural America Website, enabling them to get involved and make their voices heard. Through the site, visitors can contact key decision makers by sending letters to Congress or by submitting public comments to the FCC. Visitors also have the opportunity to customize letters to the editor and submit them online to their local media outlets.

arrow Postcards
In a return to the traditional grassroots, we created 8.5”x11” cardstock flyers with tear-off postcards and distributed them at events and in U.S. Cellular stores throughout the U.S. The flyer offers information about the issue and the campaign, and allows individuals to sign and submit the postage-paid cards. Thousands of postcards poured in from concerned citizens in 36 states, and we successfully used them to draw high-level attention to the issue by periodically sending constituent copies to U.S. Senators.

arrow Informing Elected Officials
To further raise legislative awareness on this issue and to highlight its importance to residents around the country, we tracked and collected all press coverage in support of rural wireless development and the Connecting Rural America campaign. The clips, which ranged from letters to the editor, newspaper articles, to TV and radio coverage, were then compiled as part of a graphics-rich campaign overview, which was delivered to more than 100 members of Congress, dozens of governors and key staff at the FCC.
